Hi ok like i wrote above which head unit do you think is the best choice. before i show you my choices let me say what i want.

the head unit should be top quality. the sound very accurate. the only extras that i want is a active crossover.

here are my choices.

1. clarion 9255
2. pioneer dex-p99r
3. alpine 7998r
4. clarion 938r
5. pioneer p88( i think that is the name.)

my first choice is the clarion 9255 becouse it is suppose to have the mcintosh cd drive in it.. after that i am not sure. price should not be above 350 tops 400 euros. new or used i dont care.

thanks brian

You won´t get a 9255 or HX-D2 as it is called here in Europe for that price. Only in the US perhaps and that will be more expensive also if you calculate the 28% custom fee on top of it.

From the remaining 4, I would definitely choose the P88RS. Another good headunit you didn´t include is the Clarion 958 RMP, which is also available for the mentioned price used.

hi bolle thanks for the answer. the 9255 i mean is the older version. in ebay they go for around 350 and the 958 is way to ugly for my taste. can you tell me a little more about the pioneer dex-p99r?

Thanks for the help

brian

ps you can write back in german.

Hi Brian,
the older version is called DRX-9255. It's a very good sounding headunit, but is has NO active x-overs. In addition they are delicate for overheating.

The DEX-P99R is still a good HU today, regarding sound as well as its features. Especially the latter one is a big advantage compared to the DRX, which I personally sadly never did listen to. The one big problem of the P99R is its display making a not very loud high noise, but this can be fixed.

I think the 7998R isn´t realy god.
These so expensive features are not enougth.
So you have to buy the RXA701 and the RUX, ...
and the price of 400€ used is too heavy because you have just a 1.5din display, ... all the ofter features are waste if you´ll use the pxa.

sory for my worse english, but I think this should be said, ... in the worst english ever ... :ugly:

best regards, "understand nothing" :D

@brian:

What about the classic SQ-combination Alpine 7944 + PXA 701?

It's a little more expensive than the mentioned devices but it should be the most flexible solution and it's fully digital

ok, .. jetz dann ma in perfektem englisch ...

FUCK!! :wall:

hi and thanks for the help. it looks like i will be looking for the DEX-P99R. i think from all of the above this should be the best buy, but i still would love to hear the DRX-9255.

Hi Brian,

even if you already made your decision I just can recommend to try also the 938. Apart of its optical appearance it could convince you if you hear it...
It is also quite easier to get it for a reasonable price in the used market than the DRX9255 which is rather interesting for pure passive solutions.

best regards
Sven

that is my problem now. should i spend more and get a better unit or go for the 938? i know i can get it a lot cheaper but will i want again the better unit in 6 months or 1 year. :wall:

The DEX-P99R hast the much better DSP compared to the 938. Regarding sound it is a matter of personal taste, both units should play on the same level...

ok i read up on it. if i understand what it does that is a very important part of the radio. if the p99 works better than that is what i want. sq from my head unit.

thanks brian

It means that you have much more filter options available, with the 928 or 938 for example you can´t really run a fully active sound-system, which you can with the DEX-P99R. Regarding SQ, both units are very good and available very cheap.

Hi Brian,

in my opinion the biggest advantage of the P99 is the price, its very cheap in comparison to the other mentioned. The display has 2 disadvantages, the display has a quite bad readabilty an it makes a (gentle) fizzling noise.
The 7998r has a more or less similar equipment but it can play MP3s an leaves you the possibility to use a DSP later. Also it has a much better Display. But you have to control if it fits to your Dashboard (mechanicaly) becaus of the 1,5DIN Display.
The mentioned possibility to use a 7944r with the pxah 700 / 701 is also a good idea regarding sound performance. But here it might be a problem that many 7944 have problems playing cd-r s.

From the 5 Headunits you've mentioned above I would choose the 7998r (did so 2 years ago ;)), also had the P99r for some weeks and the 7944 / pxah 700 combo for a few month.

hi jan if i may ask where do you live in hessen? close to hanau? or frankfurt?
if so maybe i can listen to your alpine?

Hi,

im living in Gießen, but I don't have the Alpine anymore. At the moment I've got a Sony CDX C90 without any active Crossovers and the whole Car's more a construction site ;).
